We patronize them for their incompleteness, for their tragic fate for having taken form so far below ourselves. And therein do we err. For the animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complete than ours, they move finished and complete, gifted with the extension of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. People find it hard to believe that the fight to save the whales has begun again. But the reality is that commercial whaling is happening. Japan, Iceland and Norway have upped the ante, killing thousands of animals in spite of a global moratorium.

More and more nations are supporting a resumption of the killing. It is not a time to slaughter but a time to find ways to conserve, to create. Only public outcry will save the whales and give them all the protection that our laws and governments can provide.

Catastrophic climate change already threatens the survival of every single species of whale alive today. If we lose the whales, the changes in the marine ecosystems on which we all depend for our lives will, in turn, impact our own survival.
